French Island is accessible by passenger ferry or light aircraft. Ferry travel is either from Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsular (Melway map 195 F5) or from Cowes on Phillip Island. You can travel to Stony Point by car or train and the Stony Point Caravan Park provides safe day or night parking for $2.20.

Travel time from Melbourne to Stony Point is an easy hour and a half drive (around 70km) along the Monash Freeway (M1) which you leave just out of Dandenong to travel along the Westernport Highway to join the Frankston Flinders Road to Hastings, then follow the signs to Stony Point. Make sure you turn left (over the railway line) opposite Bittern Motors service station (just past Kinfaun estate). It's a good idea to allow a further 15 minutes to park your car, buy your ferry tickets and walk along the jetty to the Inter Island Ferry, George Bass. This is an 85 passenger catamaran with an upstairs outside deck, ideal for dolphin and seal spotting while enjoying a fresh breeze on a hot day.
